From 1986, Eric Hassell & Son Ltd. has been involved with the Offshore Drilling Program of Texas A & M University .  The Ocean Drilling Program conducts oceanographic research on behalf of the United States National Science Foundation, as well as other foreign government sponsored institutions.

Scientists sail the world's oceans in consecutive cruises on board the drill ship "JOIDES Resolution".  During these cruises, approximately eight weeks long, scientists drill deep into the sea floor to penetrate millions of years of Earth's geologic history. From these holes, scientists retrieve sediment, rock samples and geophysical data from the layers beneath the sea floor. The cores - slender cylinders approximately 9.5 meters long - reveal clues about Earth's origin, evolution and present day structure. Scientists from a variety of disciplines examine the cores to learn about the Earth's basic   processes including the rearrangement of continents, the

evolution of life in the sea, global climate changes over time, ocean currents, worldwide sea levels and Earth's magnetic field.

The vessel, the "JOIDES Resolution" is quite unique and often requires out-of-the-ordinary services from its shipping agent.  We provide a range of services for these port calls:

  • Medical services to crew
  • Crew changes 24 hours a day
  • Hotel arrangements and ground transportation
  • Crew changes and provision of stores by helicopter
  • Telephone and cellular service
  • Mail and courier services

Eric Hassell & Son Ltd. have represented several other research ships in the past.  Many of these vessels use Barbados as their favored Port of call for changing crew or just to collect provisions.  Barbados is ideally suited for these operations because of the efficiency that can be achieved with the co-operation of the Barbados Port Authority and regularity of flights arriving and departing the Airport.  With its ongoing relationship with the Texas A&M University Ocean Drilling Program, Eric Hassell & Son Ltd. has gained tremendous expertise in dealing with these unique vessel calls.

As a result of earlier drilling research off the South East Coast of Barbados CONOCO brought the TransOcean Deep Sea Drilling vessel PATHFINDER to conduct wild-cat drilling exploration in 7000 feet of the Blue…waters of the Atlantic Ocean.  Eric Hassell & Son Ltd. moved more than 1600 Rig crew from Plane to Hotel to Helicopter to Rig and back again.  EHSL moved/cleared all shoreside equipment from helicopter spares to Diamond Drilling Bits.
